Construction and demolition waste

    Clean wood

    Leftover dry, untreated wood can be burned in a wood stove or taken to one of IVAR's recycling stations.

    Clean wood can also be burned in organized and permitted Midsummer bonfires (page is in Norwegian). Otherwise, it’s illegal to burn building materials and other waste in bonfires within Stavanger municipality to protect air quality.

    Pressure-treated wood

    Pressure-treated wood is hazardous waste and must be taken to one of IVAR's recycling stations.

    Asbestos-containing waste

    Old roof tiles, wall panels, and other building materials containing asbestos need to be handled with extra care.

    Styrofoam

    Take styrofoam to one of IVAR's recycling stations. Only small amounts should go in the regular trash (residual waste).

    Bricks, concrete, and floor tiles

    Deliver building materials like brick, concrete, and similar items to one of IVAR's recycling stations.

    Other construction and demolition waste

    If you don’t give away or sell leftover materials from construction or demolition, you should take them to one of IVAR's recycling stations. This includes:

    • Building materials made of brick, concrete, and similar materials
    • Roofing felt
    • Stones, gravel, and soil
    • Gypsum
    • Porcelain, such as sinks and toilets
    • Windows
    • Ceramic tiles
    • Flooring materials
    • Insulation

    If you’re unsure how to sort something, ask the staff at the recycling station.

    Waste from contractors and businesses

    Contractors, plumbers, electricians, and other professionals doing construction or demolition work for others must handle the waste as commercial waste and deliver it to an approved facility for sorting, material recycling, and energy recovery (pages are in Norwegian).
