Garden waste

Summary

  • Garden waste should be placed in the bin with the green lid.
  • If you haven’t received such a bin, you can get one from the municipality. (This does not apply to holiday homes.)
  • If you don’t want a dedicated bin for garden waste, you'll have to compost the waste or dispose of it in another legal way.
  • You can order free collection of larger amounts of garden waste. Read more at hentavfall.no (page is in Norwegian).
  • If you live in an apartment and only have small amounts of garden waste from a balcony box, you can throw it in the residual waste bin.
  • Housing cooperatives and neighborhood associations with a shared waste solution can get a similar solution for garden waste (page is in Norwegian).

What do you sort as garden waste?

  • Anything that grows in your garden is garden waste.
  • Generally, this includes grass, leaves, garden plants, branches, twigs, small tree trunks, and similar materials.
  • IVAR, which manages municipal waste, has a detailed list of what’s allowed in the garden waste bin.
  • Garden waste is composted, so you must place it loosely in the bin without any packaging.
  • The waste collectors will not empty the bin if it contains plastic bags, bio-bags, plant pots, or similar items.
  • Food waste is not garden waste. See what to do with food waste.
  • Stones and soil are not garden waste; you should keep those in your garden.
  • Debris from sweeping streets or driveways should be placed in the residual waste bin.

How to dispose of sorted garden waste?

Use the garden waste bin

Place your garden waste in the designated bin with the green lid and the leaf symbol. If you have a standard-sized bin (140 liters), it will be collected on a regular schedule. If you have a 400-liter bin, you must schedule collection at hentavfall.no (page is in Norwegian).

The bin will not be emptied if it’s too heavy or contains anything that isn’t garden waste.

Plastic bags, bio-bags, plastic plant pots, or other foreign materials in the bin will result in the waste collectors refusing to empty it.

Do not throw garden waste into the brown food waste bin; it will not be emptied if you do.

Small amounts of garden waste

If you don’t have a garden but have a small amount of garden waste from balcony boxes or flowerpots, you can dispose of it in the residual waste bin.

Large amounts of garden waste

You can deliver garden waste yourself at one of IVAR’s recycling stations (page is in Norwegian). There is no charge if you are only delivering garden waste. The waste should be delivered loose, not in bags or bundles.

Stavanger Municipality offers a collection service for larger amounts of garden waste. See more at hentavfall.no (page is in Norwegian).

Do you need a (larger) bin for garden waste?

If your household doesn’t have a garden waste bin, send us an email, and the waste collectors will deliver one for you.

Does your household need a larger bin for garden waste? You can get:

  • One or two 140-liter bins, the standard size, which are emptied every two weeks (see the collection schedule).
  • A 400-liter bin, which you must schedule for collection yourself at hentavfall.no.
  • One 400-liter and one 140-liter bin. You'll need to schedule collection for the larger bin, while the 140-liter one will be emptied on the regular schedule.

There are no 240-liter size garden waste bins because they tend to be too heavy and often break during emptying.

Watch the weight of your garden waste bin

Garden waste can be heavy. To protect the health of the waste collectors and avoid damage to the bin, it must not be too heavy. If it is, it will not be emptied:

  • In a 140-liter bin, you can place a maximum of 50 kg of waste.
  • In a 400-liter bin, you can place a maximum of 100 kg of waste.

What happens to the garden waste?

The garden waste you deliver is composted at IVAR’s composting facility in Sele. You can buy finished compost for your garden from IVAR.

Don’t want your own garden waste bin?

You are not required to have a garden waste bin if you dispose of your garden waste in some other legal manner.

It is illegal to dump garden waste in public green areas, even if they are adjacent to your own garden.

If you have a garden waste bin but want to cancel it, use the form on our website.

Composting garden waste yourself

There are several ways to use garden waste as a resource in your own garden. Some of these options can reduce your waste collection fees.

Free shredding of branches and twigs

You can order free shredding of branches and twigs at hentavfall.no, up to three times during the summer season. The wood chips can be kept for use in your own garden.
