February 2th, the Dialogue forum for diversity and inclusion of Stavanger municipality launched a survey related to work, democratic participation, public information and racism.
Among the questions asked are: Can the municipality do something different to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities in the labour market? Have you seen, or even experienced racism or discrimination in Stavanger? Are you active in politics, boards or organizations?
- I hope we succeed in reaching the new voices in the local society and getting them to speak, so that we get answers to these important questions, says Deputy Mayor Dagny Sunnanå Hausken.
- Diversity is a resource
Sunnanå Hausken emphasizes that ethnic diversity is a resource that Stavanger wants make more use of than today.
- I am proud of the diversity in our city, and that we have a large, committed and organized environment within our communities of faith and religion. As a municipality, we have an important social responsibility in this area. Stavanger’s main municipal plan states that we must strengthen the diversity society by dialogue and interaction with Church of Norway and other religious and faith communities. The answers from the survey will give us important insight into what the immigrant population thinks the municipality should do different, to build community and strengthen Stavanger as a better city to live in for everyone, the Deputy Mayor states.
In order to reach out to the target groups, the Dialogue forum for diversity and inclusion will contact groups that the municipality does not normally reach in digital channels and other public participation arenas.
- With this work, we want to uncover challenges like hidden racism in society and how we can work to ensure that everyone experience that they are equal, regardless of background, says Jaroslaw Sobon, member of the Dialogue forum for inclusion and diversity.
European network
Stavanger Municipality also works internationally with religious and faith issues. For several years, the municipality has been a member of the ICC (Intercultural Cities), a network that is a part of the Council of Europe, consisting of more than 120 cities.
Dialogue Forum and Diversity and Inclusion
The Dialogue forum has been appointed by the municipal council and is chaired by Mayor Kari Nessa Nordtun. The forum consists of politicians, the immigrant council, the leaders of the municipal district committees and 15 citizens with an immigrant background, who have been recruited following applications from private individuals. Of the latter, several have experience from social and business organizations.
One of the forum's most important tasks is to look at new ways of involvement and participation that ensure Stavanger's immigrant population has an influence on goals, strategies, plans and measures that deal with them.
