Waste sorting in housing cooperatives and condominiums

Contact the board about waste sorting

If you live in a housing cooperative or condominium and want to set up a shared recycling station, discuss it with the board.

The board can arrange for shared containers and free collection of both glass, metal, and garden waste.

We recommend that a board representative contact the municipality for advice on the types and number of containers needed, as well as the best locations within the cooperative or condominium.

Garden waste with shared waste systems

Residents in housing cooperatives, condominiums, or other residences that use shared waste systems, whether using common waste bins or underground containers, won’t receive individual garden waste bins. Instead, there will be a shared solution for garden waste.

The board can contact us to figure out the best solution. Here are the options:

  • One or more 400-liter bins emptied upon request via hentavfall.no (page is in Norwegian).
  • One or more 400-liter bins emptied on a regular schedule every two weeks.
  • One or more 140-liter bins emptied on a regular schedule every two weeks.

The board can also request garden waste collection or a container for garden waste after communal clean-up events (Norwegian: dugnad) in the area (page is in Norwegian).

Whichever solution is chosen, no plants (whether from indoor pots or balcony boxes), soil, or stones should be mixed with food waste.

If there’s no shared solution for garden waste and no gardens, small amounts of garden waste can be disposed of in the residual waste.

Food waste bags for housing cooperatives and condominiums

Housing cooperatives and condominiums with shared, locked entrances can order food waste bags for the entire building. A board representative can log in to hentavfall.no to place the order (page is in Norwegian). Contact us if you don’t have an account.

Plastic packaging in housing cooperatives and condominiums

Housing cooperatives and condominiums with underground containers can arrange for collection of plastic waste. The board can order plastic return bags on hentavfall.no (page is in Norwegian) and schedule collection by sending an email to tilbakemelding.renovasjon@stavanger.kommune.no.

The board must specify where the bags should be placed. They can not be placed on top of the underground containers.
